Most business owners in communities are excluded from the economic hub and opportunities of flourishing their small businesses. The Gauteng Department of Social Development conducted a small business capacity building workshop in Mamelodi East Satellite Point, Matimba Singqobile Centre to help business owners to be able to work with the department.
The aim of the workshop was not only to inform business owners about opportunities within the department, but also to assist them in registering their businesses and training them about the importance of using local content.
Social Development together with the Department of Treasury and the Department of Economic Development empowered over 90 attendees to take charge and register their businesses.
Thembeni Gqadu from Gauteng Social Development said, “It is not only about telling people to register but also to assist them. SETA arranges the stall free of charge and also assists with registering, funding and management.”
Community members were also encouraged to use diverse community-based media platforms to mobilize themselves. These local media houses are effective in marketing their small business to lure consumers. Among other media houses encouraged to be used were, Soshanguve radio and Mamelodi community radio. One of the attendees, Tshepo Ngobeni, owner of Ngobeni Projects which deals with events management thanked the department for going out of its way to help small business owners with such information and support that will be vital for the growth of their business.
These workshops will be conducted throughout the province. The upcoming workshop will be held on 08 June 2016 in Tsakane Old Age Home.
